Captain Mike Walters

Captain Mike Walters has served the community with The Anderson Police Department since January 1991. He was promoted to Sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Division 1997 with primary investigative responsibilities in homicides, violent crimes, and sexual crimes. In 2001 he began to specialize in child abuse and sex crimes. He was instrumental in creating a Child Abuse Response Team. This involved The Anderson Police Department, Anderson County Sheriffs Office, The Department of Social Services, Anderson County Solicitors, and Medical teams working together as one to expedite prosecution of child sexual predators. This began the inception of Anderson County working toward a goal of a Child Advocacy Center. Captain Walters continues to serve on the Foothills Alliance Board of Directors which houses Prevent Child Abuse, Sexual Trauma Center, and Child Advocacy Center. In 2003 he was awarded a federal grant for Child Abuse and Elder Abuse. In 2004 he was honored by the State of South Carolina Front Line Worker of the Year for outstanding service in responding to Child Maltreatment. In 2006 he was promoted to Inspector in Charge of developing the first Internal Affairs Division in the Anderson Police Department. He had the honor of being named Police Officer of the Year in 2006. He became Lieutenant over the Criminal Investigations in 2007. In 2008 he was assigned Lieutenant over Administration and Records Division. He was promoted to Captain of Support Services in 2008 responsible for training, recruiting, and accreditation. He has received extensive training throughout his career including Street Survival, Aggressive Criminal Enforcement, First Line Supervisor, Homicide Investigation, Child Abuse Investigation, and Finding Words (Interviewing Children), Advanced Finding Words, Advance Finding Words 2, Practical Homicide, Police Internal Affairs, Basic Public Information Officer, and 7 Habits for Law Enforcement Professionals.
