Chief Martin Brown

Chief Brown is originally from Anderson County, Belton, South Carolina. He graduated from Belton-Honea Path High School in 1970 and continued his education at the University of South Carolina (USC). He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education in December 1973 and in 1978 a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from USC.

He began his law enforcement career in 1975 as a Patrol Officer for the Belton Police Department. In 1976, he entered on duty with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Columbia, South Carolina. Over a thirty year career with the FBI he was assigned permanent duty stations in Columbia, S.C., New York City, Washington DC, and Greenville, S.C. Temporary special assignments have included stops in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Puerto Rico. His primary FBI investigative duties and assignments included Violent Crimes, White Collar, Domestic Terrorism, and Foreign Counter Intelligence matters. In 1983, he was selected from the ranks of the FBI to become one of fifty Special Agents assigned to a newly formed tactical unit, the Hostage Rescue Team (HRT). The HRT is a full time national level tactical team prepared to deploy to any location throughout the world to conduct a successful rescue of US persons who may be held illegally by domestic or international terrorists.

From 1993 until 2006, he was assigned to the FBI office in Greenville, S.C., where he held numerous positions to include Senior Supervisory Resident Agent, Senior SWAT Team Leader and Violent Crime Task Force Coordinator. In February 2006, he retired from the FBI.

On February 17, 2006, he was sworn in as the Chief of Police for the City of Anderson.

Chief Brown is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the South Carolina Police Chiefs Association, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association.

He resides in Anderson County with his wife, Debbie, of thirty-seven years. They have three children, a son 28 years of age and twin daughters 24 years of age.
